A Weekend at the Bracken Hide, Isle of Skye

Cabins at the Bracken Hide, Isle of Skye

Can you believe that the end of last year is the first time I've ever stayed overnight on the Isle of Skye?

I couldn't quite believe it either. I've spend so much time on the Isle of Skye over the last few years, going on beautiful walks on the island and trying some of the best food in the Scottish Highlands. One part of visiting the Isle of Skye that I've really missed out on over the last few years is staying in some of the amazing accommodation options on the island.

In the middle of November, we stayed at the Bracken Hide Hotel. This incredible new hotel, located just outside Portree, is an ideal spot for anyone who wants the convenience of a centrally located hotel, with the feel of a country escape. There is a gorgeous main lobby with restaurant and whisky bar, but, rather than having bedrooms in this building, each room is an en suite cabin overlooking Portree and the surrounding area.

One of highlights of our stay at the Bracken Hide was enjoying their delicious breakfast whilst seeing the sun come up over Portree. We were staying at the Bracken Hide with some of our best friends who live in the Central Belt, so watching the Isle of Skye waking up in beautiful sunshine really showed the beauty of the Scottish Highlands.

We also loved that the Bracken Hide felt like it was in the wilderness, but was only a short walk from the biggest village on the Isle of Skye, Portree. We spent our Saturday morning wandering about the streets of Portree, looking in the lovely shops and enjoying a coffee from Birch at the waterfront. We were very grateful to have some beautiful winter sun during our weekend, meaning we were able to really enjoy the some time outdoors.

Dessert at the Bracken Hide, Isle of Skye

We had some really incredible food options during our stay at the Bracken Hide, from dinner in their restaurant, to cocktails from their whisky bar and breakfast during our stay. We especially enjoyed the breakfast options which allowed for the wide varieties of diets within our group. The picture above shows the dessert I had on the Saturday night, a chocolate delice with berry jus and strawberries. This isn't normally the kind of dessert I would choose, but this was honestly one of the most delicious things I ate last year.

Since the Bracken Hide only opened in 2023, we stayed during a time of change and alterations, meaning some of the experiences we had will probably change in the coming months. However, this didn't stop us from having a fantastic time during our stay and I'm looking forward to having more opportunities to visit and explore the Isle of Skye from an island base again soon.
