Silent Night, Holy Night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child.
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Last year, I shared a bunch of blogposts focusing on some of my favourite Christmas carols. This year, I'm hoping to continue this by focussing my blogposts in December on one of my favourite carols, Silent Night. Each week, I'll focus on a verse of this beautiful carol.
As I was thinking about this first verse of Silent Night, I started reflecting on just how busy the Advent season is. There are carol services to attend, Christmas markets to browse, presents to buy, movies to watch, cards to write. The list could go on and on.
But reflecting on this carol shows us the peace of this time. For Mary, giving birth in a stable wouldn't have been the ideal situation. Yet throughout this, there is peace. When the angels tell the shepherds about the baby born in Bethlehem, they proclaim:
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favour rests."
Luke 2:14
When we think about the Advent season, we can hardly ever call it peaceful. But during the Christmas story, we read about the peace that God offers us. I'm praying that, even in the busyness of all that is going on over the next few weeks, I won't forget the peace that God is offering us during this Advent period.
