A few weeks ago, we had to do a delivery to the Cairngorms. This part of the Scottish Highlands is one that I've driven past plenty of times whilst on the A9, but I've actually hardly ever strayed off the main road and explored the towns, villages and beauty spots around the Cairngorms.
We didn't really have any plans or intentions with our afternoon exploring the Cairngorms, apart from knowing we needed to grab some lunch somewhere on the way down. We had heard good things about Cheese and Tomatin in Inverness and we were very excited to discover that they had another restaurant in Aviemore. So we set our destination for Aviemore and headed for lunch.
One thing I have always loved about living in the Highlands is discovering great foodie spots in slightly unexpected places. Cheese and Tomatin's Aviemore restaurant is upstairs in an outdoor shop, so might seem a bit random to many people trying to find a good place to get some lunch. I had a Mediterranean Medley pizza, which had delicious toppings of feta, sundried tomatoes, red onions and a balsamic glaze. Normally I'm a bit boring and opt for a classic Margarita pizza, but having a really different and exciting pizza like this one was really delicious and filling lunch.
After lunch, we had a wee wander along the main street of Aviemore, going into the shops we wanted to have a look at and window shopping at the shops which were already closed. To finish off our afternoon in Aviemore, we grabbed a wee treat at Miele's Gelateria. I enjoyed a scoop of hazelnut and a scoop of cherry swirl, which were both really delicious.
We are hoping to maybe come make to this part of the Highlands for a weekend away at the end of the year, so having a wee taster of what's on offer in Aviemore has been really helpful for planning a future trip. We can't wait for our next opportunity to explore the beautiful Cairngorms region of the Scottish Highlands.
