Duncraig Railway Station

Duncraig Railway Station, Scottish Highlands

One thing about me is that I love trains and heading for long journeys by train. This is the way I first travelled to the Scottish Highlands, getting the train from Glasgow and heading north on the West Highland Line to Fort William to see my now-husband for the weekend. Now that I have my own car, heading on the train is a slightly rarer occurance, but I love every chance I get to explore the Highland railway stations.

A few weeks ago, on a visit to one of my favourite villages in Lochalsh, Plockton, we headed a few miles away to Duncraig railway station. If you've ever visited Plockton, you might recognise Duncraig Castle on the other side of the bay.

Duncraig railway station was built to serve the castle along the Kyle Line, which runs from inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, the gateway to the Isle of Skye.

Although the Kyle Line is one of the most scenic railway lines in the world, this little train station at Duncraig is one of the least used stations on the line. Serving about 500 passengers a year, you have to request for a train to stop here. But when you are waiting for a train here, you are rewarded with an incredible view of Plockton overlooking Loch Carron.

I would love to spend more time exploring the quirky stations that make up the railways line that serve the Scottish Highlands in the future. In the meantime, I loved exploring this quirky wee spot so close to home.
