Dundreggan Rewilding Centre

Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, Scottish Highlands

Over the last few months, we haven't had as many big opportunities to go on big adventures around the Scottish Highlands. Because of work commitments, we've only had mornings off whilst we've worked late into the evenings. Although this hasn't always been my favourite way to work, it has allowed us to go on some shorter adventures a bit closer to home.

A few weeks ago, on a very autumnal Tuesday morning, we headed east towards Inverness to visit the Dundreggan Rewilding Centre. You might be wondering what exactly is a rewilding centre, and I was certainly with you.

Dundreggan Rewilding Centre is the first of its kind in the world. Primarily being run by a charity growing nature trees to regrow our nature woodlands in the Scottish Highlands, Dundreggan is an ideal spot to explore the incredible nature we have here.

Around the centre, there a couple of short walks to explore. We love a short walk and the oppurtunity to get out into nature, especially when so much of this year has been spent indoors working and getting away from the rain. Shorter walks are also ideal for our dog Bru, who is still healthy but can't manage longer walks now he is 13 years old.

Information Boards, Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, Scottish Highlands

One aspect of our walk at Dundreggan that I loved was all the information boards dotted throughout the walks which explain information about the flora and fauna of the Scottish Highlands. It's such a great oppurtunity to learn about the unique plants and animals that make up the landscape surrounding Dundreggan. These signs are translated into English and Scottish Gaelic, so it's also an oppurtunity to learn about the landscape of this place in the language of the land.

As well as having lots of lovely walks, Dundreggan also has a lovely cafe, An Nead (meaning "the nest" in Scottish Gaelic). When we visited a few weeks ago, we decided to have a coffee and cake between us and read our books at the seats looking out the window. It was such a lovely moment of calm within our busy day.

If you're spending time in and around Inverness and looking for somewhere to enjoy some short walks, I'd highly recommend heading through to Glenmoriston and visiting Dundreggan Rewilding Centre. It's about an hours drive from Inverness, with plenty of carparking and dog friendly. There are also a number of activities and guided walks that the centre run throughout the day, so if you are interested in looking into what Dundreggan Rewilding Centre offers, you can find out more information here.
