Exploring the Isle of Seil

Houses in Ellenabeich, Isle of Seil, Argyll

Just over a month ago when I was researching places to visit in and around Oban, I was struck with a real urge to try to visit another island if we could. If you didn't know, I have a goal of visiting 30 Scottish Islands by the time I turn 30. Before heading on our trip, I had managed to tick off 9 islands off my list. I am so thankful to say this trip took me into the double digits.

I hadn't even heard of the Slate Islands or the Isle of Seil before looking into visiting them. But, as soon as I started reading into these islands, I really wanted to visit them. To get to the Isle of Seil, you simply drive over the stone Clachan Bridge-often known as the "Bridge over the Atlantic"- from the mainland and you are in a new island. Some people might think this means it's no longer an island, but, as someone who lives near the Isle of Skye, I disagree.

When we got to the island we stumbled upon a most wonderful surprise.

It just so happened when we visited the Isle of Seil that their annual scarecrow festival was taking place. We didn't realise this before we went but it was hard to miss it once we arrived. All over the island, gardens were decorated with scarecrows dressed as famous characters.

This is one of the things I love most about rural places, whether that's in my home in the Scottish Highlands or a little place like the Isle of Seil. Despite the how small these places are, the communities are so willing to get stuck into community activities. Whether that's being involved in a local business or village fete, or creating a scarecrow to sit in your garden, these places are full of people who are willing to get stuck into community life.

The scarecrow festival this year ran from 22nd to 30th July and I am certainly hoping the lovely people on the Isle of Seil will keep it going. But even if you miss the festival, I would recommend a wee visit to the island with a very interesting history and beautiful surroundings.

I am so excited to tick another island off my 30 before 30 list. The Isle of Seil really surprised me and I really look forward to visiting again.
