Falls of Foyers | Saturday Day Trips in the Highlands

Falls of Foyers, near Inverness, Scottish Highlands

What do you like to do on your days off? For me, getting out and exploring a new place is on of my favourite things to do on my days off. Most of the time, this ends up being a Saturday, so I'm hoping over the next few months I can write a number of posts about what I get up to on my Saturdays.

For me, I don't like to travel too far on a Saturday, so when we plan a Saturday day trip we try to keep it within an hour and a half from our house.

Falls of Foyers is located on the south side of Loch Ness, about 25 minutes from Fort Augustus. If you are driving from Fort Augustus, I would really recommend simply enjoying the drive. The scenery all around you is simply stunning!

We arrived in the little village of Foyers and decided to grab a spot of lunch out at Cameron's Tea Room. I enjoyed nachos with salsa, sour cream and cheese, and a delicious hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows! An absolutely delicious way to warm up before heading out to the Falls.

Having done a lot of waterfall walks in Scotland, I was so surprised to see how easy and quick it was to see the Falls. It only took us about 10 minutes to walk down to the viewing areas to see the Falls, so it was a really great walk without being too strenuous! However we did have to walk downhill to get to the viewing platforms, which meant that at the end of our time, we did have to walk back up a fairly steep hill. So be warned about that.

Now here's the thing about the day we visited Falls of Foyers: because it hadn't rained in this part of the Highlands for a while, the Falls were fairly unimpressive on the day we visited. However, with a bit of imagination you tell that the Falls of Foyers would be really impressive after a couple days of rain (or even on a rainy day!)

In terms of places to explore in the Highlands for a day trip, I think visiting the Falls of Foyers was pretty great. We were able to seeing stunning scenery from our car on the journey, enjoy a lovely lunch at Cameron's Tea Room, and get out on a lovely autumnal walk. All round, it was a perfect Saturday day trip for us.

What do you like to do on your days off? Can you recommend any good day trips in the Scottish Highlands?
