Glencoe Lochan

The Pap of Glencoe over Glencoe Lochan, Lochaber, Scottish Highlands

If you've been following along with my blog for a few years now, you'll know how much I love a walk in the Scottish Highlands. I am not a hill walker by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love the oppurtunity to get outside and enjoy a (flat) walk in nature. I love finding new places throughout the Scottish Highlands to enjoy these kinds of less intense walks.

At the start of this year, I really made it a goal to try and make time to explore some of the places we spend so much of our time driving through but never make the time to actually explore for ourselves. The number one spot we are most guilty of driving through without making any time to actually visit is Glencoe. Although we admire the views from our drives through Glencoe probably once a month, we've never actually made the effort to stop and enjoy this majestic spot for ourselves.

I remember seeing pictures of this walk over on Instagram at some point last year and thinking to myself, "I really do have to make the effort to visit this spot soon".

After a bit of research (using my favourite Pocket Mountains 40 Walks books) I discovered a bit more of the history of this beautiful spot. In the late 19th century, Lord Strathcona took ownership of the Glencoe Estate after spending most of his life as a businessman in Canada. His Candian wife was so homesick, that her husband decided to plant conifers around this lochan to recreate a Canadian forest right in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. I've never visited Canada properly myself, but from pictures I've seen, the environment around this beautiful lochan really reminded me of the wilds of Canada.

We visited on a beautifully sunny Saturday in the February. The walk around the Glencoe Lochan itself is fairly short. It only took us around 45 minutes to walk around the lochan twice. However, if you are looking for a beautiful walk taking in the beautiful mountains surrounding Glencoe, this is an ideal walk.
