How to Spend a Rainy Day on the Isle of Skye

Here's the thing about visiting the Isle of Skye: it is often very, very wet. I love living near the Isle of Skye and getting to visit all year round, but one thing people often struggle with is finding things to do on the island when the weather is miserable. So I've complied a list of things to do on the Isle of Skye on when the weather isn't on your side.

Visit a Distillery

One of my favourite things to do on the Isle of Skye on a rainy day is visit one of Skye's famous distilleries. The biggest and probably most famous distillery is Talisker, which is in Carbost. Talisker have many tour options available, which you can find here. Even if you don't manage to book onto a tour, you can visit their fantastic visitor centre with gift shop to buy yourself a bottle of Talisker to take home.

Another fantastic distillery to visit is Torabhaig Distillery on the Sleat Peninsula. This distillery is much newer but offers some great tour options for all whisky fans. They also offer a chocolate pairing tour for an added luxury on a rainy day. You can find out more about my experience taking a tour at Torabhaig Distillery here.

A Rainy Day on the Isle of Raasay

Alternatively, if you want to take a short 25 minute to the Isle of Raasay, you can visit the distillery there. I love visiting the Isle of Raasay and trying their whiskies and gins. If you're looking for a bit of adventure as well as a wee dram, Rassay is somewhere I'd definitely reccomend.

Enjoy a Cosy Lunch

One thing the Isle of Skye is well equipped for is enjoying a cosy lunch or coffee at a cosy cafe on a rainy day. One of our favourite stops we visited recently for a cosy lunch was Bog Myrtle Cafe and Bookshop in Struan. When we visited, we enjoyed homemade, seasonal food and delicious homemade sourdough cinnamon buns. It was a lovely cosy meal and we loved the chance to sit inside such a welcoming space, eat some delicious food and read our books for a few hours. It was the perfect way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day on the Isle of Skye.

Embrace the Weather

The alternative to hiding away when the weather is bad is simply to embrace it. One thing I always tell people about visiting the Isle of Skye throughout the year is that you can never rely on the weather forecast. It may be raining at one end of the island, but blue skies at another.

Personally I think you see the most dramatic sides of the Isle of Skye when its raining as well. So often, even when the weather looks bad, we'll put on our rain jackets and wrap up warm and head out into the bad weather anyway. I actually love getting out on a walk on the Isle of Skye in weather like this and you can read some of my previous blogposts to find some of the walks I've been on during the winter months on the Isle of Skye including:
