"By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down out lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth."
1 John 3:16-18
Recently, I've been spending my morning Bible study time reading the little book of 1 John. It's one of those little books at the back of the New Testament that can often get overlooked. It is one of my favourite books in the Bible, however, and we even used a passage from 1 John at our wedding.
This passage really stood out to me as I was reading it during the week. When I think about love, often I think more about the emotions and feelings of love. But this little section of 1 John isn't about that kind of love. This is about letting the love that Jesus had for us seep into our whole lives, affecting everything we do.
This passage really did strike me and make me think when I first read it. Can I honestly say that I always live out the sacrificial love that Jesus has shown to me in my actions? Can I say that my actions truly reflect the love of Jesus?
This week, I'm going to spend some more time reflecting on what it means to live out the love of Jesus in my actions. Even though it won't be an easy task to live out my faith in action in this way, I know that I have help from the Holy Spirit living in me and when I mess up, I have grace from God.
