My Top 3 Beaches to Visit in the Scottish Highlands

Grasses on Nairn Beach, Scottish Highlands

When you think of summer in the Scottish Highlands, you don't always think of enjoying sandy beaches. But one of the real hidden gems of the Scottish Highlands is the abundance of fantastic beaches dotted throughout the Highlands and Islands. As the summer approaches, I thought I'd share some of my favourite beaches I've visited (so far) in the Scottish Highlands.

Nairn Beach

Before visiting Nairn for the first time, I'm not sure I could honestly say that I even liked beaches. But Nairn Beach really turned that around for me. With a couple of miles of sandy beaches and the area's famously warm micro climate, there are few better places to visit on a dry day than Nairn Beach.

Another one of my favourite things about visiting Nairn Beach is getting to visit James' at the Putting Green. This little takeaway spot is ideal for your post beach walk snacks , selling homemade ice cream, milkshakes and smoothies, as well as coffees and cakes. We love to visit this wee spot and it is a real hidden gem in this part of the world.

Dornoch Beach

When we first visited Dornoch almost 2 years ago, I was shocked to see just how amazing this beach was. It was so warm the day we first visited that we ended up walking right along the beach with our feet in the water. After 18 months of staying in the UK because of Covid restrictions, walking along the beach in Dornoch felt almost like being in a tropical paradise.

Sand Dunes in October, Dornoch Beach, Sutherland, Scottish Highlands

Even last October, when we visited Dornoch again, it was so lovely to walk along the beach and get that salty sea air in our lungs. It just as beautiful in June as it was in October.

Talisker Bay, Isle of Skye

A hidden gem on the Isle of Skye that we first discovered this time last year, its a bit of a trek down to Talisker Bay but so worth it. The mix of white and black sand makes this a really unique spot in the Scottish Highlands. Even when we visited on probably the warmest day of last Spring, there was only a handful of other groups there, making it an ideal spot to chill out and relax. Once you're finished with your time at the beach, there are plenty of spots nearby in Carbost for a coffee or some lunch, such as Cafe Cuil and Caora Dhudh.

These beaches are fantastic, however I am fully aware I have only scratched the surface with some of the incredible beaches throughout the Scottish Highlands. I'm hoping that this summer will be another chance to visit some more and see just how wonderful and diverse the Highlands and Islands truly are.
