New Every Morn

Gorse blooming in the Scottish Highlands

Praise the Lord

His Mercy is More

Stronger than Darkness,

New every morn

Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

During the Advent season, I always share reflections on my favourite Christmas carols. This year, I was having a think about if I wanted to share anything in the run up to Easter and had a real epiphany. Why don't I just share a reflection each week on one of my favourite hymns in the run up to Easter? It seems like such a simple idea, and I am so excited to share some reflections on one of my favourite new hymns in the run-up to Easter: His Mercy is More.

I think this hymn has been a part of my life for the past four years. I remember first hearing it when I was doing a year long ministry role in Stirling in central Scotland. For me, that year required a lot of learning to rely and trust God, even when the circumstances around me were difficult. I often felt really alone in my role, and had to trust that God was there, even when it didn't feel like it.

This song, and this verse from the little Old Testament book of Lamentations were a great comfort to me at the time.

"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed,

for His compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;

great is your faithfulness."

Lamentations 3:22-23

 Each morning, I would wake up knowing that the day might bring challenges but I can trust that God's mercy and compassion is new each day. If I mess up, I can ask for His forgiveness and He will be faithful to forgive me. This is still true today and has been such a beautiful reminder to me each morning. Great is His faithfulness.
