Some Thoughts on Love

Love is something that's featuring a lot in my life right now. Valentines Day is tomorrow. I'm currently in the middle of studying a course on marriage counselling. For the last few weeks, love is something I've spend a lot of my time thinking and pondering over.

What do you think love is? Is it the warm, snuggly feelings you have for the people you want to spend the most time with? Does it best describe something that we are really passionate about, whether that's another person, our favourite food or a special place? Or is it simply something that each of us need or want to have in our life?

When you look at what the Bible has to say about love, we realise that love is actually a person.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love."

1 John 4:7-8

God being love changes everything about how we understand love in our lives. God being love helps us to understand what love really looks like. And because we are made in the image of God, He helps us to display love to others around us.

This takes love from being an airy fairy concept, to a clear real life example of actions, attitudes and teaching we can look to as we seek to love those around us. Jesus teaches that love causes us to put the desires of others before ourselves, to love others as we would love ourselves. He shows how great His love is when He died on the cross for you and me.

If you want to know what love looks like, you should look to Him.
