The Debt we Couldn't Afford

What riches of kindness He lavished on us

His blood was the payment, His life was the cost

We stood neath a debt we could never afford

Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

Today is Good Friday. Even as a child growing up in a Christian family, going to church every week, I struggled to understand why a day we remember when Jesus died could be called good.

It's only as I've grown up as an adult that I've really come to understand the goodness of this Friday. When I was reflecting on the final verse of His Mercy is More, I was reminded of this verse from (probably) my favourite book of the Bible, Colossians.

"He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; He has taken it away, nailing it to the cross."

Colossians 2:13-15

We all have sin problem that separates us from God. It's a debt we could never afford to pay. Nothing we could do would be able to pay back the debt we owe. Instead of leaving us on our own though, Jesus went to the cross to pay the debt that we owed. He has taken away the sin that separates us from God.

Good Friday is good because God's mercy was more than we can ever imagine.
