When you think of a King, where do you imagine them?
My second post in my Advent series is from another one of my favourite carols, Once in Royal David's City. It's quite a long carol, but my favourite verse is the second one.
He came down to earth from heaven
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall:
With the poor and mean and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
The crazy and wonderful thing about the Christmas story is the contrast between what we would expect and what really happened. The Saviour of the world came to the world as a tiny baby. And not only that, but He wasn't born in a palace surrounded by servants, but He was born in a stable surrounded by animals.
Jesus was born into the world in the most humble of ways, and yet He was still the Saviour of the world. He is God, and yet He wasn't born in a palace. Throughout His life on earth, Jesus is constantly going the extra step and humbling Himself in order to reach the lowest in society (next week we are going to think a bit more about some of those people who were first to meet Jesus). This is one of the reasons I love Christmas so much: it gives me an opportunity to reflect on just how amazing Jesus is!
