The Skye Marble Line

One of my favourite things about living in the Highlands is discovering new things about places I think I know lots about. Because we live on the mainland near the Isle of Skye, we spend a lot of time exploring the island on our days off. However, even though we spend so much time on the island, we still find new things to explore and discover each time we go.

This weekend, we opened our beloved Skye Forty Walks book and headed on a new adventure. This time we headed out on Broadford to Cill Chriosd on the way to Elgol for find out more about the Skye Marble Line.

In the 1800s, there was a railway here used to transport the gleaming white Skye marble from the hillsides of Central Skye to the bay at Broadford. After closing the railway in the early 1900s, the railway line has been turned into a great footpath which takes you from Broadford all the way into the hills near Torrin. Even today, you can still see the remains of the mines and the circular wheel which would have pulled wagons up and down the hillside.

For me, the most spectacular part of this walk was seeing the views of Central Skye from a whole new angle. We had spectacular views over to Blà Bheinn and the Red Cuillin. For February, the views were incredibly clear and it was almost warm in the sun.
