When you think of the landscape of the Isle of Skye, what images come to mind? Is it dramatic images of volcanic mountains? Is it rugged seacliffs with billowing waves below? For many, it is these images that are what bring people from all over the world to the beautiful Isle of Skye.
But there are parts of the Isle of Skye that don't really look like this this. On Saturday, we got bundled into our car and headed to the Sleat Peninsula. Even if you've visited the Isle of Skye before, you may never have visited this part of the island before.
Our day in South Skye started the way it often does, with some lunch in a cosy spot. We headed to the Coffee Bothy in Broadford, somewhere I've heard loads about but haven't managed to actually go to yet. The Coffee Bothy is a cosy wee spot, with a lovely wood burning fire for ultimate cosiness. I had a delicous (and absoutely huge) bowl of Thai green lentil soup, which really filled me up for a day of adventuring on Skye. I was so full, I didn't even get a chance to try one of their delicious looking cakes! If you're going to be spending time in Broadford on your next trip to Skye, I'd highly recommend checking out the Coffee Bothy.
As we headed towards the Sleat Penisula, I was struck by just how different this part of the island is from other parts of Skye. This part of the island has lots of rolling hills and villages by the sea. It feels a lot more like the seaside villages of Wester Ross than some of the other villages on the Isle of Skye. There are little croft houses and hotels dotted over rolling hills with views over to the mainland.
At the end of the road, at Aird of Sleat, there is another hidden gem in this part of Skye. Aird Old Church Gallery is a great wee studio which has some wonderful pieces of art, showing some of the most beautiful spots on the Isle of Skye and the surrounding area. I've known about them for a while (we've stocked some of their prints and cards at my work for a few years now) but it was so wonderful to meet Peter and Jane in person and find out more about them and what they do.
After driving to the road end and back, we decided it would be lovely to have a another coffee break, so we stopped at An Crùbh. This wonderful community space in South Skye has loads of great activities on throughout the year, as well as a great shop and cafe. I had never been here before, despite driving past An Crùbh many times. I'm hoping to bring some of my family along to it in the summer months to get a look at their stunning views, as well as soon delicious food.
Some Things I'd Love to Explore on South Skye
Although I really got a feel for some of the things South Skye has to offer, because the weather was so bad, we didn't really get to go out and explore as I would want. Here's the list of places I'd love to visit in South Skye later in the year:
Armadale Castle and Gardens
Point of Sleat walk
We had a wonderful day exploring South Skye at the weekend. If you heading to the Isle of Skye soon, I'd take a look at all that South Skye has to offer. It really so much to do and see and it's the perfect place to explore on Skye.
