If there is one thing I cannot stress enough about the Scottish Highlands, it is the sheer magnitude of the place! There is so much more to the place than simply Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye.
In light of the fact that I now live in the Highlands and can visit many of its wonderful places within a few hours, I have set myself a challenge: I hope to visit the 5 places on this list before I turn 25 in September 2022! With the ongoing restrictions, it might not be possible to visit them all, but I love a challenge and I am so I'm excited to explore these places!
1) Climb a Munro
Not a exact place, but definitely something I want to achieve. My home is surrounded by many of the tallest and most impressive mountains in the UK, and I really hope 2021 will be the year I am able to climb one of these amazing mountains for myself. A Munro is any mountain over 3,000ft (or 914m) so it isn't going to be the easiest challenge for me, but I really hope I am able to take in the beauty of the Highlands from the top of a mountain this year.
2) The Cairngorms
A part of the Highlands that I often drive past on my way back home from the Glasgow, the Cairngorm National Park is the largest in the UK. I honesty don't really know much about this area other than the fact that there are lots of mountains here, but I'm hoping that I can spend some time in this part of the Highlands (very) soon.
3) John O'Groats
One of the most famous landmarks in Britain, this place in the most northerly point in the British mainland. I can't even quite imagine how windy and how wild the weather can be in this part of Scotland but I am really excited to, one day, say that I have taken a picture at this signpost.
4) Loch Ness
Another area that I often drive through on my way to Inverness, I do have to admit I have never had much of an urge to stop and have a look for Nessie. However, on a recent detour, I realised just how beautiful the areas around Loch Ness actually are! That day, I really didn't have time to stop and have a look around, so I am really excited about the prospect of exploring this famous loch at some point this year.
5) Another Scottish island
Did you know that there are actually a number of Scottish islands included in Highland council? One of my life goals is to visit at least 100 of the 900 islands around Scotland-another pretty big challenge I know! Since the Isle of Skye is only a short distance from my home, I have spent a lot of time exploring that famous island and its neighbour, the Isle of Raasay. I am hoping to travel to some more of the islands in the Inner Hebrides, particularly some of the Small Isles.
So there we go! The top 5 places that I cannot wait to explore in the Scottish Highlands. I'm so excited for Covid restrictions to start to ease in the coming months so that I can start to explore more of this vast wilderness in the Scottish Highlands!
