I love Scottish Islands.
If you've been following along on my blog or maybe if you folow me on Instagram, you'll know that one of my big goals is to visit 30 Scottish Islands before my 30th birthday. By the end of 2023, I'd visited my 16th Scottish Island, after we went on a joint work and pleasure trip to the Orkney Islands in October 2023. We had every intention of planning a trip to another Scottish Island in 2024, but our plans were put on hold and we never got a chance to visit any new islands last year.
During our recent visit to Oban, I had a little wish to try and make time for a trip to a new island, but I had no idea where to go. It was only after we spotted Kerrera Marina across from our hotel that we decided that Kerrera would be the island to visit.

We headed off the ferry and just decided to wander about the island for wee while and see what we discover. For me this is one of the best ways to enjoy the Scottish Islands.
A word of caution for those hoping to try and visit Scottish islands in the off season: Scottish islands are generally still in hibernation mode until Easter. We intially made plans to visit The Waypoint Restaurant at the Marina, but obviously didn't read the website properly and only discovered an hour before we headed on the ferry that the restaurant didn't open until the last weekend in March. Since the weather was so good, we decided to head across anyway and just see what we discovered on the Isle of Kerrera for ourselves.
During our wander around the north end of the Isle of Kerrera, we stumbled across a lovely little honestly shop. Visiting these kinds of shops is one of the best ways to explore a Scottish island in my opinion, as it gives you a chance to see the kinds of crafts and produce only available on the island. Whilst we were visiting Ardentrive Farm Shop, we managed to pick up a tin of Sea Tea (which is made on the island and you can find for yourself here) and a frozen lamb neck joint, whihc we slowed cooked into a delicious curry once we got home. Supporting little local spots like this is one of my favourite ways of exploring Scottish islands, so it was so nice to stumble across this spot.
Although we only visited for an hour, I'm so glad we made the trip over to the Isle of Kerrera on our recent visit to Oban. This little island might seem to be somewhere not worth exploring, but I love these little places dotted throughout the Highlands and Islands where people are living and working (just like where we live in Lochalsh). I hope in the future, I get another oppurtunity to visit the Isle of Kerrera and discover more about it's beauty and the people who call it home.
