Turning Sorrow to Singing

"I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the people;

I will sing praises to you among the nations.

For your steadfast love is great to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the clouds.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!

Let your glory be over all the earth!"

Psalm 57:9-11

These past few weeks have felt heavy. There are some hard things going on in the world right now. Fighting and violence. Hunger and thirst. People in need. People hurting. Last Sunday in church, I felt myself welling up watching a video about those in need in Europe. I felt angry and sad about how many in the world are hurting right now. And I felt so upset about the injustice of things going on so close to my own home.

At times like this, I often feel lost about how to help. From my home in the Scottish Highlands, it feels far from the troubles so many are living right now. I check the news app on my phone and feel overwhelmed by all the terrible things going on all over the world. I go on social media and see hundreds of different viewpoints from people all over the world. I end up feeling lost, not sure if and how I can help.

What I can do is pray. I have been so struck recently about how powerful prayer is. It's something I often struggle with in my faith, but it is so vital to my relationship with God. When we pray, we are bringing our struggles, our hope and our petitions before the One who created the heavens and the earth.

I was really struck by these verses of a psalm I read at the weekend. His steadfast love and faithfulness is great. If this is how David was able to understand who God is in his lifetime, surely this is how I need to see Him too.

When I feel like I can't do anything, I can turn to the One who can do all things.
