With the Dawn of Redeeming Grace

Silent Night, Holy Night!

Son of God, love's pure light.

Radiant beams from Thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord at thy birth

Jesus, Lord at thy birth.

In my final Advent post, I thought I'd share about my thoughts on the last verse of Silent Night. When I read over this verse today, thinking about what it means to worship Jesus, I was reminded of the story of the magi who came to visit the baby Jesus.

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary, His mother, and they fell down and worshipped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh."

Matthew 2:10-11

The magi travelled from far away to find out the meaning of the star they had been following for so long. But I imagine they probably weren't expecting to find a young child as the long awaited Messiah. Yet, when they saw this young child, they recognised him as the one they were looking for. They bowed down and worshipped Him and gave Him the the gifts they had brought.

This year, spending so much time reflecting on this Christmas carol and the Christmas story, I've been struck by how wonderful and joyful the Christmas story is. For the shepherds and the magi, being told and seeing the miraculous things from God would have been incredible. But then going to find the young Messiah, they cannot help but rejoice and worship Him.

Where is your joy found this Christmas?

There are so many wonderful and joyful things at this time of year. We love to celebrate the season with lots of different events and festivities. But for me, the greatest joy above all others is that Jesus came to earth, the Messiah who came to save us. With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at thy birth.
